Might be my favorite safety razor

This is probably my favorite safety razor. The slightly rounded handle feels right in my hand and the angle of attack of the blade is just about perfect. It easily takes off my beard while making it easy to get through a shave with no nicks. And it looks beautiful for a mid-priced razor. (I bought this from a different store, so I won't show up as a verified buyer, but I swear I actually do have one and am not a Fatip employee padding out the scores).

Luck of the Draw

First, I again commend Fendrihan for is timely and superb customer service. Upon confirming that the handle on one razor (olive wood closed comb) was defective, they promptly offered a store credit that I used to purchase a replacement razor (wenge wood open comb) that was shipped to me on a priority basis. Well done! Over the past several years, I've owned eight or more Fatip razors, all of which had the new and improved heads. Some were open comb, but most were closed comb. Some had wood handles, and some had chrome handles. Though I purchased only the last two from Fendrihan, I understand that, regardless of the handle, the heads on the chrome-plated heads are identical, Therefore, it may be helpful if I share my observations on the chrome-plated heads, in general, before making my review of the two razors most recently purchased from Fendrihan. The chrome plating is sub-par. In some instances, the defects in the plating are cosmetic and don't affect the shaving experience; however, in other instances, the defects are material and a comfortable shave cannot be attained. Regardless of the various razor blade brands that I used, and regardless of the various techniques applied, the razor blades did not naturally align parallel to the cap. Moreover, even if the razor blade ultimately could be aligned parallel to the cap, an extra effort then was required to make sure that the razor blades were equally exposed on both sides Significantly, however, though it was possible ultimately to satisfactorily align the razor blade in some instances, it simply was impossible to do so in other instances. This appears to be due to the facts that: (1) there are gaps in the chrome plating at the junction of the posts to the underside of the cap; and (2) the holes in the base plate are oversized and in some instances irregularly shaped (oblong rather than circular). And in one instance, the defects in chrome plating resulted in a rough edge to one safety bar. Turning to my two most recent purchases: I was impressed with the quality of the chrome-plating on the head of the closed comb razor and on the accents to the olive wood handle. The razor blades (Personna Platinum Red, Rapira Platium Lux) naturally aligned almost parallel to the cap, with almost equal blade exposure on both safety bars. With a minor tweak, it was easy to satisfactorily align the razor blades. Using the Rapira Platinum Lux razor blade, a very mild, multi-pass shave was close and comfortable, with little or no blood loss. The Personna Red Platinum razor blade did not yield as mild a shave. Alas, the wood handle not only lacked the expected multiple, dark swirls of grain characteristic of fine olive wood but instead was an unremarkable piece of yellow-colored wood that also sported a small gash. As a replacement for the olive wood closed comb razor, I selected, and Fendrihan graciously and promptly shipped, the wenge wood open comb razor. I commend Fendrihan for making a special effort to ensure that the wenge wood handle was fault free. Unfortunately, however, the head ranked among the worst of any Fatip that I ever had seen. Though many of the defects in the chrome head were cosmetic, some were material and fatal to the use of the razor. Significantly, portions of the posts closest to the cap were not plated, and the holes in the base plate were both over-sized and irregular (oblong). The razor blade (Personna Platinum Red) did not naturally align parallel to the cap and it was close to impossible to align the razor blade so that it was both parallel to and equally exposed to the two safety bars. After excessive effort, I once was able to attain satisfactory alignment of the razor blade. But it was for nought. Though the open comb head was somewhat more efficient than the closed comb head, the shave was disproportionately more aggressive and uncomfortable. I did not use it a second time. Why do I persist? If one receives a Fatip closed comb, wood handle razor that is satisfactorily chrome-plated and whose wood handle is free of defects, they will be in for a treat: a reasonably priced, aesthetically pleasing, chrome-plated brass razor that will provide shaves almost as gentle as that of a Feather D2, but more efficiently. In my case, I was able to mix and match to attain the desired result: Fatip zebra wood handle, closed comb head, completed with a Rapira Platinum Lux razor blade. Though I wasted a lot of money in failed experiments along the way, the total price that I paid may be only slightly more than the price for some premium safety razors.
