Geo. F. Trumper Coconut Shaving Soap with Wooden Bowl

This soap has a clean, natural feeling, light fragrance which lasts a pleasant amount of time without lingering too long. It feels exceptionally natural on the face, and will not leave behind any slick feeling. It also lends itself nicely to building a 'super lather' when a slightly-too-watery lather is combined with a finger-tip worth of high quality shaving cream (I use a Taylor). The scent comes through the cream to add an interesting nuance, but is mild enough not to overpower. I feel that this is really where this product shines; however, I find it lacking in several important ways as a stand-alone product. This was my first shaving soap, and I started using it well over two years ago. I recently started using a cream, and only in retrospect do I now realize that this soap wasn't everything I could have hoped for. I now find that the lather is very finicky to get right, usually lacks cushion, and invariably ends up either feeling thin and watery or being quick to dry and flake off. Also, due to the bowl being natural wood, it eventually developed a crack all the way through which meant it wasn't reusable as originally intended.

Geo. F. Trumper Coconut Shaving Soap with Wooden Bowl

I live in a location where our tap water is rather soft. I also use a boar hair brush with bristles that are stiffer than most badger hair brushes. These are ideal circumstances when trying to lather up a shaving soap, as opposed to a shaving cream. Despite this, I really can't say I am able to consistently lather up my Geo F. Trumper Coconut Shaving soap past a consistency comparable to thick foam. More often than not, I find it either dries or dissipates too quickly on my face. I sometimes have some great days with it, but like I said, I don't find it very consistent. That said, I appreciate that the soap is based on a coconut oil mix, rather than a heavy coconut fragrance. That means it really smells like coconut but is not at all overpowering - that may or may not be a quality you are looking for. Its presentation also deserves mention, as the beautiful wooden bowl looks great in the bathroom. (I sometimes like to keep the bowl open overnight just so I can walk into an amazing coconut smell the next morning.) Considering my circumstances, the price range of the product, name behind it, and how long I've been using it (nearly four months, on and off), I'm really surprised that I cannot seem to produce a very rich or creamy lather with this soap and I'm sad to give it a three out of five stars. I'll be trying out the GFT Coconut Shaving Cream in the near future in hopes that I can produce a creamier lather with the same coconut oil-based mix.

Great bush
Love this brush! It’s super great quality for the cost of it. I got the large and it’s perfect for my long thick hair. My hair feels smoother after using and it’s been helping with my flaky scalp.

Nice smaller boar brush
My only other Semogue boar brush is the SOC, so when I say smaller, that's my reference point. In comparison, this is still breaking in, while my SOC is old. The 1470 has a smaller knot, but a lot more backbone. It holds plenty of lather for a 3 pass shave. This particular comb, however, is a touch above even other high-quality horn combs. It doesn't have the pungent animalic smell of other brands, though it clearly is real horn. The fit-and-finish of every element is top notch. The spacing of the comb tines is just right; it adjusts hair as much as one wants while gliding smoothly and not pulling at all. The weight is solid enough to make sure the comb will last a long time, while not being burdensome to hold. The size is the perfect middle-ground between too small to be of effect, and too large to comfortably handle. Lastly, it's a beautiful comb fit for display.

I hope I’m not jumping the gun on this, having only used it twice but if you’re looking for a good (aggressive) body brush I would recommend this one. I intentionally went for a hard brush and am well pleased with this.
